Sector Rotation

Every sector ranked from first to last by return, for each year in the selected range. The sector at the top changes frequently, and leaders in one year have not consistently stayed there. A leadership count shows how often each sector finished first, in the top three, or in the bottom three over the period you choose.

Leadership Count

How many times each sector finished #1, top 3, or bottom 3 over the selected period.

How to read this

Leadership rotates. A sector that finished #1 in one year has not consistently remained a leader the following year.

A broad mix tracks the average. Holding many sectors, or a total-market fund such as VTI, produces returns closer to the middle of this table rather than its extremes.

Consistency is visible separately from #1 finishes. Some sectors finish in the top half regularly; others alternate between the top and bottom of the ranking.

Worth noting: Market leadership changes frequently. Historical winners have not consistently remained leaders the next year.
